An endearing old model of a seated spaniel, carved from Welsh coal. Frequently not recognised as such today, coal was often used during the latter part of the nineteenth and the early twentieth centuries as a medium from which such models were manufactured. An interesting Pair of Late 19th Century Antique Victorian Pine Alms Dishes of good color and simple open box form, the carrying handles undecorated and shaped for comfort. These dishes come from the Isle of Anglesey in North Wales and would have been in regular use in chapel for many decades until the recent widespread abandonment of religious observance which has, sadly, led to the demise of this hitherto important aspect of traditional Welsh culture. These would originally have been used either in the dairy of a large house or farm, or perhaps in an establishment dealing in groceries and provisions.
