From our extensive stock of Antiques Reference Books :- A fine, clean, First Edition copy of "Turner at Petworth : Painter and Patron", published by the Trustees of the Tate Gallery, London,  in 1989. This beautiful book celebrates the new collaboration between the National Trust and the Tate Gallery over the world- famous collection of paintings by Turner at Petworth, his association with that house and the patronage of the third Earl of Egremont. The twenty oil paintings acquired by the third earl still at Petworth are all reproduced in colour together with Turner's paintings of or related to Petworth which now hang in the Clore Gallery. A special feature of the book is the facsimile reproduction of the complete set of 135 gouache drawings on blue paper. Remarkable for their feeling of spontaneity and sense of place, they were made while Turner was staying at Petworth, probably in the summer of 1827. Martin Butlin has written the chapters on Turner's early paintings at Petworth, the Petworth landscapes, the interior and figure subjects associated with Petworth, and Turner and the Petworth Collection which includes illustrations of many of the Old Masters that profoundly influenced Turner's art. Much of the original research on the gouache drawings was undertaken by Ian Warrell; his findings underlie the main text and are published in full in the two appendices. The book also contains an introduction for the general reader by Mollie Luther. A landmark academic publication of great importance, and an essential work of reference for those who would seek to understand and thus properly appreciate the work of this great English painter. Large format, hard covers, 300 pages, original dust jacket. Ref. TAPPAP/ **. $395.00. Please add 35.00 USD to your order to ship this item. Thank You.
