Travels in Imperial China : The Exploration and Discoveries of Pere David : George Bishop
.jpg)
A fine, clean, First Edition copy of "Travels in Imperial China : The Exploration and Discoveries of Pere David", by George Bishop, published by Cassel of London in 1990. Pere David, the famous Nineteenth century French missionary and zoologist, was one of the world's great travellers. Against terrifying odds and in constant danger from suspicious mandarins and local chieftains, M. L'Abbe Armand David made three trips of exploration and discovery through Imperial China, Inner Mongolia and Tibet. Between 1864 and 1874, his travels took him across the Great Wall and into Inner Mongolia, into Szechuan along the Yangtse River, and through Central China. During his treks over deserts and mountains, Pere David kept notes and diaries in which he faithfully recorded his discoveries and adventures, fighting off marauding bandits and evading attempts to imprison or murder him. These notes form the basis of George Bishop's swift moving narrative. Pere David is probably best known as the discoverer of Pere David's deer and as the zoologist who first brought the Panda to Western attention; but his fame rests on more than these achievements alone. The list of plants, animals and birds which he collected, identified and recorded, seems almost endless. His reports and discoveries were a major sourse of academic excitement during the last century, and he was made a member of the Academie des Sciences, awarded a gold medal at the Sorbonne and presented with the cross of the Legion of Honour. Hard covers, 192 pages, good black and white illustrations plus excellent full color plates, original dust jacket. Ref. ZTIICTEADOPDGB/C1.
