The pair of pictures, painted circa 1846, upon which these lids were based formed part of the collection donated to the nation by \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robert_Vernon_(art_patron)\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: red;\"\u003eRobert Vernon\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e in 1847, both of which paintings were deemed damaged beyond repair and subsequently lost following the flooding of the Tate Galleries in 1928. A thorough investigation by Art Dealer \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/philipmould.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: red;\"\u003ePhilip Mould\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e and television presenter \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fiona_Bruce\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: red;\"\u003eFiona Bruce \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/a\u003ein Series 9 : No. 3, of the BBC series \"\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/iplayer\/episode\/m000yq4s\/fake-or-fortune-series-9-3-landseer\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: red;\"\u003eFake or Fortune\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e\" concluded, on the authority of Richard Ormond, currently considered to be the leading authority on the artist, that the painting of \"War\" under investigation was not the original work by Landseer.
