The author, He Li, was born in Shanxi Province, China, in 1950, and was trained at the Palace Museum, Beijing and the Idemitsu Museum, Tokyo, two of the world's greatest repositories of Chinese ceramics. Since graduating in Art History at The University of Kansas, she has been a Research Associate at the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco.
