A lovely Early 19th Century Antique English Georgian Ironstone Polychrome Plate, decorated in a typical "Imari" palette with vases of peonies. The reverse clearly marked in underglaze blue, TONQUIN CHINA within a crowned floreate device, { Godden, Mark No. 4505 }, the Maker of which remains so far unidentified. Although a matter of conjecture, it would seem likely that the name was taken from the American merchant ship "TONQUIN", the first commander of which was Edmund Fanning, who sailed to the Qing Empire for valuable Chinese trade goods in 1807.
