Description

A good Early 20th Century Vintage English Copper Vacuum Washing Dolly, "The Swiftsure", manufactured in Islington, Liverpool, Circa 1910 - 1920's. The device was patented by a subsidiary of the British Vacuum Company founded by Hubert Cecil Booth in 1901, Booth being one of a number of people credited with having invented the first vacuum cleaner. The vacuum washer was actually a posser, { sometimes known as a dolly }, which, mounted upon a "T-shaped" wooden handle, was used to mix and pound the washing in a galvanised "dolly tub", the three vents at the top of the head enabling the water to flow through. As electric washing machines became more common, these manual items gradually fell out of use. This example with old solder repair, evidence of hard use in days gone by.
