With a nod to Confucius, and to those Jesuit missionaries who, in the 16th Century, named the Standard Chinese language Mandarin, from it's Chinese name meaning "language of the officials". ~ This lovely Late 20th Century porcelain figurine, "Mandarin", inspired perhaps by his former tutor Noke's fascination with characters from the orient, and offered here in a red colourway, bears all of the hallmarks of Reg Johnson's multi-faceted talent, not only as designer, but also as potter and painter. Superbly modelled, beautifully decorated, and fired in his own studio, "Mandarin" offers the perfect introduction to the works of this talented Staffordshire artist, examples of whose work may now be viewed at The Potteries Museum and Art Gallery. The underside fully signed in black script, viz. :- Madarin { sic. } by Studio Potter Reg Johnson.
