Another amusing Early 20th Century Antique Toby Jug , unmarked but probably by Allerton's of Longton, Staffordshire, the smallest of three sizes presently available. The base with faint scratched X plus the numeral 4 ~ Could it be that this piece was for some unfathomable reason rejected during production, { although it looks perfectly fine to our eyes ! }, which would explain the lack of a Maker's Mark ? To quote Monica South, "It is debatable whether or not "Toby" items are true "Gaudy Welsh". Nevertheless, many collectors display them so as to complement their "Gaudy" pieces". cf.
