Description

A fine, clean, Third Edition copy of "Spode's Willow Pattern and Other Designs after the Chinese", by Robert Copeland, great great grandson of William Copeland, Josiah Spode's original business partner, first published in 1980, this copy issued by Studio Vista of London in 1999. The oriental landscapes and patterns of the blue and white porcelains imported in their millions from China greatly influenced the English earthenware industry of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The Staffordshire potters copied these motifs directly as well as developing oriental themes of their own. However, it was Josiah Spode more than any other potter who responded to the Chinese influence and made the Willow pattern, and other designs after the Chinese, very much the trademark of his company. Hard covers, 214 pages, black and white illustrations plus full colour plates, original dust jacket.
