This attractive and rarely encountered Early 20th Century Vintage Royal Doulton Art Deco English Porcelain Figurine, "Marietta" ~ HN 1446, decorated in a green and lavender colourway, was designed by leading Doulton artist Leslie Harradine, and was issued from 1931 to 1940. The source for this character would appear likely to derive from the operatic or theatrical worlds and it is interesting to speculate upon the identity of the original. The famous Italian contralto, Marietta Alboni had died some forty years earlier, while the career of the American actress, Marietta Canty was at this time in full swing on Broadway prior to her embarking upon a long and successful career in the film industry. Constructive comment and suggestions are, as always, welcome. This example fully marked on the underside in green with the printed Royal Doulton backstamp as used from 1927 to 1932, together with the numeral 7, indicating that this figurine was produced in 1934, in green script, Marietta, HN 1446, and Potted by Doulton & Co., plus indistinct impressed Model Number and Date Code for 1934.
