Description

A large, sparsely coloured but attractive Mid 19th Century Antique English Victorian Equestrian Royal Portrait Pottery Figure, with raised gilt titling, of the Duke of Cambridge ~ P C158 ~ H 722. George William Frederick Charles, Duke of Cambridge { 1819 - 1904 }, a grandson of George III, married Louisa Farebrother, an actress. The marriage was never officially recognised by Queen Victoria, as, at the time, a Royal was not permitted to marry a commoner, and as a result, she was never granted the title of Duchess. Commander-in-Chief of the Army from 1856 - 95, the Duke was appointed Field Marshal in 1862. During the Crimean War of 1854 - 56, he was wounded at the Battle of Inkerman and fell gravely ill, his wife then following him to the Crimea and nursing him back to health. Notorious for his view expressed in January 1846, at the beginning of the Great Famine in Ireland, "Rotten potatoes and sea-weed, or even grass, properly mixed, affords a very wholesome and nutritious food... there was plenty of grass in the field though the potato crop would fail".
