An attractive Framed Oil on Canvas ~ "Portrait of Peter Groome", { 1927 - c. 1998 }, bearing at bottom right what purports to be the signature of the Scottish portrait and landscape painter, Sir William Oliphant Hutchison, PRSA, { 1889 - 1970 } ,together with the date 1931. This, if authenticated, would indicate an early example of the work of this highly regarded artist.
The sitter was, so we are given to understand, the son of Music Hall and Radio Actor and Personality, Stanley Groome, well known in the 1930's and 40's for his appearances on BBC Radio. Moving in the same theatrical and artistic circles, it is likely that both Artist and Actor were acquainted and thus that this is how the portrait came to be commissioned. The sitter, Peter Groome, later studied at the Royal College of Music and aspired to become a concert pianist, which ambition however went unfulfilled. The artist, an Honorary Member of the Royal Academy, and a Member of the Royal Society of Arts, served as President of the Royal Scottish Academy from 1950 to 1959 and was knighted in 1953. The painting, in good, clean, unrestored condition, having benefited only from a light clean, is presented in a period style swept giltwood frame.
