A fine and rare Early 20th Century Antique English Edwardian Royal Doulton Porcelain Cabinet Plate, "Berger", with heavily gilded border and footring, painted by Harry Piper, active at Doultons from 1892 - 1914, and highly regarded as a specialist painter of fruit and flower subjects, this plate being a fine example of his work in this genre. The obverse bearing the signature of the artist, viz. " H. Piper" , the reverse with the Royal Doulton puce printed backstamp as used from 1902 to 1922, in puce script, the title, Berger, perhaps for an early strain of the climbing rose, "Berger's Erfolg", although, The National Gardening Association record this hybrid as having been bred in Germany in 1923, long after this plate was produced; the code RA2673A, Ref. Robert Allen Design Studio ~ Pattern Numbers and the pattern number C 9731 above J., Ref. Doulton ~ Pattern Numbers, all this together with the impressed Date Code 3 or 5 - 03 for either March or May 1903. Interestingly, the artist's father, Enoch Piper, whose speciality was the painting of heraldic designs, created an armorial plaque in 1902 to commemorate the granting to Doulton of the Royal Warrant by King Edward VII in 1901 and this stunning design was displayed proudly at the Nile Street, Burslem factory for many years.
