A scarce and interesting Early 19th Century Antique English Georgian Copper Measure of two gallon capacity, and of a form rarely encountered today. The body, of seamed construction, engraved R. BANKS. 2 GALLONS., the neck again stamped 2 GALLONS together with various Weights and Measures Inspection Stamps, C5, W12 and further illegible Maker's Marks and Inspector's Stamps. The Weights and Measures Acts of 1824 and 1825 only slowly took effect outside of the main commercial centres of the United Kingdom, many measures and scales continuing in everyday use for some considerable time before eventually attracting the attention of the relevant authorities. Thus, many such items, are often of far greater age than their Weights and Measures Inspector's Stamps would suggest.
