A small and lovely Early 19th Century Antique Georgian Davenport Stone China Jug of panelled octagonal form, the shape, known as "Hydra", first introduced by G.M. & C.J. Mason, circa 1813. Decorated here in a colourful Imari palette of iron red and cobalt blue heightened with gilding, the attractive green handle modelled as a serpent's tail. The underside with printed Maker's Mark of the period, depicting an anchor within a cartouche formed of DAVENPORT and STONE CHINA, indicating an early date ~ Masons introduced their Patent Ironstone China in 1813, but, according to Geoffrey Godden, { Mason's China and the Ironstone Wares ~ A.C.C. Woodbridge 1980 }, within a few years, descriptions such as "Ironstone China" and "Stone China" were taken up by other rival manufacturers
