Description

A good Mid 19th Century Antique English Victorian Brass "Bottle" Chimney Spit Jack, complete with iron plate and it's full complement of hooks, and, unusually, with it's original heart shaped brass winding key. The escutcheon stamped, Geo. Salter & Co. IMPROVED warranted. All complete, with just a small dent to the back of the case. Whilst the mechanism can be wound, we suspect that the spring is either worn or broken and will thus be required to be repaired / replaced before the item will function for it's original purpose. A hard to find decorative period accessory for the inglenook chimney of a country kitchen. Spit jacks, hung in the chimney and were used to ensure that the meat, which hung from the hooks suspended from the iron plate was evenly cooked. Having been wound up, the mechanism slowly unwound, turning the jack and thus the meat over the fire.

Height ~ 18.50 inches ~ Width ~ 6.25 inches ~ Year ~ Circa 1860.
