A simply stunning Late 19th Century Antique English Victorian Brass Oil Lamp of finest quality by Hinks & Son of Birmingham, the ornamental stepped base, with iron insert impress marked, J. HINKS & SON 1782, supporting a superb Ionic column of striking form. Of the five Orders of Architecture, lamp bases are more commonly to be found employing the arguably lighter and more decorative Corinthian capital, the sturdy Ionic being but rarely encountered in today's market place. The most attractive vaseline glass font with abstract decoration comes with the original brass Hinks patented rise and fall burner, the wick winder button marked, HINKS No. 2 SAFETY. Setting the seal on this fine lamp, is a really lovely scalloped vaseline glass shade of the period, delicately etched with a florally inspired abstract design which complements the font to perfection. Replacement 20th Century clear glass chimney as one would expect. At some time during it's life, this piece has been converted for use as an electric lamp, only to be sympathetically restored to it's original condition at some later date. Evidence of this conversion may still be seen by way of a small hole drilled in one side of the brass base. This however does not, we feel, detract in any way from the beauty of this quite exceptional lamp.
