A most unusual Early 19th Century Antique Georgian Casket or Chasse, the latter term used to describe a medieval casket with sloping roofs like a house, from which the form of this piece is derived. Retaining its original iron staple fastening, the two brass hinges in good order, the leather covering decorated with brass studs, the top enhanced with four penwork images of soldiers. While its original purpose remains unclear, this interesting and attractive box with its red velvet lining was probably intended to sit upon the desk of a senior military officer.
