A rare and lovely Mid 19th Century Antique Victorian Gaudy Welsh Jug of large size, this one with Flo-blue decoration in what we believe perhaps to be "Dogwood" pattern as illustrated in Howard Y. Williams pioneering work of reference, "Gaudy Welsh China, { Wallace-Homestead, Des Moines, Iowa, 1978 }, Plate I, page 75. Elsewhere, in Plate VIII, page 89, the author refers to the pattern as Dogwood or Shanghai. In South's later work, "Gaudy Welsh, A Visual Reference", published in 1997 / 2002, while the latter pattern name appears, there is no mention of the former. The base marked 163 in red numerals, probably the Painter's number ~ Ex A. & P. Todd Collection.
