Description

Rarely encountered these days, once upon a time, every cottage mantelpiece would have had its complement of spill vases in which were kept the spills used to carry light to the candles from the fire. This Mid 19th Century Antique Victorian Gaudy Welsh example is beautifully decorated in "Floret" pattern and would in all probability originally have been one of a matching pair. The animalistic side handles, { We can't decide whether or not they are meant to represent cats or dogs ! In fact, only after selling this piece did we discover that an identical vase is illustrated in Volume 2 of South's "Gaudy Welsh, A Visual Reference, where on Page 155 they are described as Lions } add a mildly amusing touch to this delightful old piece.
