A large and fine Late 19th Century Antique English Victorian Staffordshire Pottery Figure Group of an English Sailor and Soldier, H 4116, "Companions in Arms", standing together, a tribute to solidarity of purpose. Well modelled and boldly coloured, the soldier on the left wearing the uniform of the 21st Lancers Regiment, cap, greatcoat, tunic, trousers and knee-boots, carrying a bag under his right arm. The sailor on the right wearing a hat, open jacket, shirt and bell-bottoms, carrying a bundle in his left hand. This figure commemorates the joint action of the British Army and Navy at the Battle of Omdurman, during the River War of 1898, in which engagement the young Winston Churchill, at that time attached to the Lancers, took part.
