A large and really lovely Early Nineteenth Century Antique English Georgian Blue and White Transfer Pottery Tureen and Cover, printed in a medium blue palette with the "Village Church" pattern, the interior decorated with a variant of the usual scene. No Maker's Mark, but the tureen with good stilt marks, deep footrim, and bearing what possibly may be the astrological sign for Luna in underglaze blue; the cover similarly marked with the sign for Mars, both of which devices are likely to be potter's marks. Coysh and Henrywood note, in Volume II of their Dictionary of Blue and White Printed Pottery 1780 - 1880, { Reprinted 1992 }, that despite this being a popular pattern, which appears to have been used by a number of potters, only one single piece has to date been recorded bearing a Maker's Mark, being that of James and Ralph Clews of Cobridge , Staffordshire, { 1818 - 1834 }. It is perhaps pure coincidence that we have purchased this tureen together with two fully marked "Castle" pattern vegetable tureens and covers, each of which carries a full set of Clews printed and impressed marks.
