A scarce, though rather untidy, ex-libris, First Edition copy of "The Illustrated Guide to Liverpool Herculaneum Pottery", by Alan Smith, published by Barrie & Jenkins of London in 1970 and formerly in the collection of Birmingham Library Services. The Herculaneum Pottery, Toxteth Park, Liverpool, has long been known, but it's unique place in the development of English potting, { It was one of the first factories in England to make non-frit bone china } and the fine quality of the ceramics it produced have never been properly recognised; consequently, it's importance has been widely underestimated. The author traces the history of Herculaneum from the eighteenth century, through the prosperous years between 1800 and 1820 and analyses the gradual decline of the factory until it's closure in 1840, providing hitherto unpublished details of the satellite works at St. Helens. Details of exports are given which clearly show the extent to which America relied on this Lancashire factory for fine pottery.
