An attractive Pair of Late 19th Century Antique English Victorian Opaline Glass Vases decorated in the fashion termed Japonaiserie, which became so popular in the 1870's, at a time when Japan was opening up both her commerce and her culture to the Western world, one result of which was that the latter soon came to exert a significant influence upon the arts of Europe. The base of each vase marked in red ~ viz :- 1 1202/8 P517 and 2 1202/8 P517. It may be considered that these codes are, in part at least, date codes, and from this one might deduce that the vases date from the Edwardian period, ie. from 1908. However, by that time, this style of decoration had long since passed out of fashion, and we therefore consider that this is thus unlikely and have therefore catalogued the pieces as Victorian.
