A truly appealing Pair of Antique English Victorian Staffordshire Pottery Dairy Cows, { H 4612 / H 4613 }, the one only with Calf, decorated in a dappled brown on white palette, and grazing by a stream flowing through rough pasture. The one animal is now missing it's calf, which, clearly, the Potter had originally intended to provide, leaving instead, a rough patch on the cow's underside. Our investigations, carried out with the aid of The Potteries' leading Ceramics Restorer, Lingard Simpson at Ravensdale Studio, have led us to conclude that, rather than this being the result of damage during the long life of the piece, it has almost certainly happened as a result of some mishap during the modelling and production of the figure. The sort of thing that, in today's world of quality control, would lead to the whole piece being rejected. Instead, it would no doubt have been sold at the time as a "second", rather than being wasted.
