A fine and rare Early 20th Century Antique English Edwardian Royal Doulton Porcelain Cabinet Plate with heavily gilded border, "Peonies", painted by Harry Piper, active at Doultons from 1892 to 1914, and highly regarded as a specialist painter of fruit and flower subjects, this plate being a fine example of his work in this genre. Produced for Tiffany & Company of New York, circa 1902, the obverse bears the signature of the artist, viz. " H. Piper" , the reverse with the Royal Doulton printed backstamp as used from 1902 - 1922, this in puce, above TIFFANY & COMPANY NEW YORK, the title, "Peonies" painted in black alongside the code RA2673c, Ref. Robert Allen Design Studio ~ Pattern Numbers and the pattern number c9732, Ref. Doulton ~ Pattern Numbers. All this plus indistinct impressed Registration Number, together with the impressed Date Code 1-02 for January 1902, the year in which Louis Comfort Tiffany became the company's first official Director of Design. Interestingly, the artist's father, Enoch Piper, whose speciality was the painting of heraldic designs, created an armorial plaque in 1902 to commemorate the granting to Doulton of the Royal Warrant by King Edward VII in 1901 and this stunning design was displayed proudly at the Nile Street, Burslem factory for many years.
