A fine and scarce Mid 19th Century Antique English Victorian Blue and White Transfer Plate ,"Death of the Bear", from the "Oriental Sport" Series, produced by Edward Challinor of Pinnocks Works and Unicorn Pottery, Tunstall, Staffordshire, { 1842 - 1867 }. This series of designs is copied directly from Spode's earlier "Indian Sporting" series, itself extremely popular and commercially successful, and may thus be regarded as a blatant example of "piggy-backing" upon the larger company's success, a practice common at this time. The reverse with underglaze blue printed mark with the series title ORIENTAL SPORT within a ribbon cartouche surmounted by a crown above the initials GR within laurel fronds. cf. Our Stock Ref. AEBAWTSDOTBP90413-XX to view a fine example of the Spode original.
