A most appealing Mid 19th Century Antique English Victorian Porcelain Christening Mug , holding just under half a pint, and bearing the name of Thomas Cox and the date 1853. A search of www.freebmd.org.uk reveals that there were twenty boys of this name recorded as having been born in the U.K. during this year, four of whom were born in the English Midlands, one in Stourbridge, two in Wolverhampton, and one in West Bromwich. As this mug was purchased in Shrewsbury, it is highly likely that the mug was made for one or other of this quartet and subsequently passed down through his family. The gilding complemented by delightfully naive floral decoration, the gilded rim now a little rubbed. Unmarked.
