Description

A good Mid 19th Century Antique English Victorian Pewter Pint Tavern Jug formerly in everyday use at The Elephant & Castle, 12, Goods Station Road, Tunbridge Wells, which hostelry appears to have opened there in 1855 when the Crimean War was at it's height. The "Castle" element of this once popular English Pub name derives from the howdah, a seat or platform for one or more persons, commonly with a railing and a canopy, placed on the back of an elephant. The body stamped PINT, together with Victorian Weights and Measures Inspector's stamp, and engraved within a simple cartouche with the pub name and that of the landlord, John Curtis, who is listed as proprietor of the establishment in 1881. N.B. :- Old dent to handle of this piece.
