A large and attractive Mid 19th Century Antique English Victorian Staffordshire Pottery Pastille Burner ~ H 3237, modelled as a flower encrusted cottage. This model is not in fact listed by Harding, however, Fig. 3237 illustrates the identical model minus the pillars. We have therefore taken the liberty of allocating the number 3237a to this item. Popular from around 1820 to 1860, pastille burners were containers, often modelled in the form of cottages, churches or summer houses, and frequently found with detachable lids, which were used for the burning of a perfumed cachou or incense. Highly desirable, not to say necessary in the days before the introduction of modern sanitation!
