An interesting and well coloured Mid 19th Century Antique English Victorian Staffordshire Pottery Figure of "The Sultan" ~ H 03 S, catalogued as Fig. C171 by Pugh in his "Staffordshire Portrait Figures of the Victorian Era", and by Harding, as Fig. 03 S. One of the quartet of figures to which Pugh refers as constituting the "Short Crimean Series II", regarding them as being of earlier date than their successors, the "Long Crimean Series", of which our Stock Ref. AEVSPFTSP167aH02S-19 offers an example. Abd-ul-Medjid, Sultan of Turkey, { 1823 - 1861 }, was regarded as having played a difficult part well during the Crimean War, { 1854 - 1856 }, throughout which Turkey was allied with Britain and France.
