In 1869, Mont Saint-Michel was transitioning from a brutal state prison into a celebrated heritage site. Napoleon I converted the abbey into a prison, but it was closed in 1863, leaving the buildings dilapidated. By the late 1860s, it began drawing its first romantic tourists.
